About Ruth Butler

MSc Biometry; Doctor of Statistics

Ruth has worked as a biometrician/statistical consultant for more than 35 years, initially in the UK, then from the mid-1990s in New Zealand. She has primarily worked with bio-protection scientists (plant pathology, entomology), but also has significant experience working with other non-medical biological scientists including in soils/agronomy, food research and plant breeding.

Ruth enjoys working closely with the scientists from the planning stage, providing appropriate and pragmatic statistical expertise for their projects. Her interests are in good data management practices, well-designed experiments, and in improving communication between statisticians and scientists.

Key Capability and Experience

  • Trial Design

choosing treatments; numbers of replicates, appropriate layout. Creating well formatted trial plan diagrams and associated skeleton data collection sheets

  • Data Managment and Manipulation

including using Excel and how to arrange your data in Excel

  • Statistical Analysis and Data Analytics

especially for counts and percentages; mixed models (ANOVA, REML, GLM, HGLM, spatial, normal, non-normal); linear and non-linear regression/ modelling; multivariate methods, statistical inference

  • Sampling

particularly entomology, plant pathology and laboratory procedures

  • Strong Statistical Software and Programming Skills:

Genstat, Excel, CycDesigN, SigmaPlot, some R, WinBugs, Minitab etc. Advice for similar software.

  • Tables, Graphics and Report Writing

Accessibly written summaries of the statistical aspects of the project, publication quality tables and figures; interpretation of the statistical analysis results.
